Owen's Story bio picture
  • Hello, and thanks for joining me on my journey.

This is Owen. He is a 3 1/2 year old boy who is loving, energetic and loves to have fun. He was diagnosed with Leukemia on November 18, 2012. This is his story.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 207-209

Today was a hospital day and we got some bad news.  I should have kept my mouth shut on the way to the hospital.  I was telling my mother-in-law about how I haven’t been posting everyday lately since he has been doing so good and I feel like we do the same thing everyday.  We got in the room and the nurse was getting ready to access his port and was cleaning it and thought it looked different.  I said that Jeff and I wanted them to look at it because last time we were there we thought it looked bruised, and recently we were thinking that it looked like it was sticking out further than it did before.  She had a couple other nurses come look at it, then the Fellow that has Owen as her patient looked at it and they all thought the same thing.  They are thinking that it looks like it is pushing its way out.  Apparently, they sometimes do work their way out and some actually break through the skin.  Another Oncologist came to see it too and this is the decision that they came to…

Take it out.  What does that mean for us… Well, they put him on antibiotics because they think there might be a little infection around the port itself.  He isn’t showing any signs of infection, such as fever, but it looks irritated.  We go back on Friday, after being on the antibiotics for a few days so they can look at it again.  His Doctor should be back (he had the flu today and was off) and they will make a decision on Friday whether or not he will be in surgery on Monday.  They said they are pretty sure they are going to need to take it out.  We still don’t know exactly what they would do after they take it out.  They said the Internal Radiologist has to look at it and assess if they think they could reinsert a new one… put one on the other side or if they are just going to do a pic line.  We are really hoping that they don’t have to do the pic line because this would mean he couldn’t get it wet… and knowing how much he loves his little blow up pool and baths, I think this is going to be really hard.  Especially in the summer.  I guess we will wait and hear what the options are on Friday.

It is just so frustrating because we are finally getting to a point that we were thinking things were going to get easier, and now a set back.  They also didn’t give him his Chemo today because they didn’t want to risk his counts dropping being that he will be going in for surgery.  They want him to be as strong as possible.  His Doctor will have to make the decision if he makes this day up or if he just proceeds with the next two doses.

Anyway I will keep you updated… this is from the other day when he was running through the sprinkler.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 201-206

Sorry we have been so absent.  The fact that I don’t have much to write about is actually a good thing!  Owen has been doing really well lately!!  We have a treatment this Wednesday, then 2 more treatments for this phase, then we head in to Maintenance!!  That is sooooo exciting!  It will be so nice to only have to go to the hospital once a month.

Happy Father’s Day to all of you Father’s out there!!

Here is one of Jeff and the boys.  Not a great picture by any means, but a recent one of all of them.

Here is one for my Dad:

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 196-200

WOW!  Today is day 200!  I can’t believe it!  Sorry I have been absent… we have been busy.  Friday, Owen had his Cardiologist appointment in the morning.  I thought it was just going to be a follow-up consult type of appointment, but they ended up doing a EKG.  SO, that was a huge fight.  Owen was NOT happy about getting all of the stickers all over.  That made the afternoon trip to the hospital even harder.  He didn’t want his port cream on, then threw a fit when the nurse was trying to access him with the needle. He was screaming and kicking her.  I felt so bad…   They gave him both of his medicines then we were on our way.  He has been feeling pretty good so far.  I hope it continues!

Friday night was Dream Night at the zoo.  The Children’s Hospital puts on an event for a ton of their patients.  Not sure exactly what all groups were there, but there were a lot.  They have special demonstrations and events going on throughout the zoo.  It was a lot of fun.  Owen wanted to take is cousin Addie Rose because she loves the zoo.   We even got to pet a giraffe!  He licked our hands!  How neat.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 194-195

Not much new here.  Owen has been feeling good.  His next appointments are on Friday.  We go to the Cardiologist in the morning, then he gets chemo in the afternoon.

Owen and I were practicing some self portraits today.  Not sure why it is, but when I am not behind the camera he actually likes to look at it.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 191-193

What a beautiful weekend!  They called for rain, but it held off.  Friday, we went over to Owen’s friends Jack and Liam’s house.  Noah and Anna were there too, and the kids all had a blast!

Saturday was another hot one, and Owen was having fun in his pool.

He has been feeling good.  He had a kinda rough night sleeping last night.  He kept moving all around like he couldn’t get comfortable, then asked for pain medicine around midnight.  I am not sure if his legs were bothering him (from the Vincristine) or if he just knew that the pain medicine would relax him and help him to sleep.  He did fine afterward.
