Owen's Story bio picture
  • Hello, and thanks for joining me on my journey.

This is Owen. He is a 3 1/2 year old boy who is loving, energetic and loves to have fun. He was diagnosed with Leukemia on November 18, 2012. This is his story.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 178-181

We had a beautiful weekend.  Owen was so excited because our garage sale was on Saturday morning.  I think he “bought” more from the neighbors than we sold:)  He had fun.

Sunday was his birthday party!  He had his best friends come over for a Super Hero Party!  The kids all got capes and got to do a super hero rescue to save our one dog.  Owen had such a wonderful time and was so happy to celebrate with his friends.

I promised him that after his birthday we would get out the pool.  He has been asking for weeks, and I finally gave in today.  It was close enough, and it was pretty hot out.  I figured I mid as well let him use it!  He was loving his new Spiderman lifevest that Nanny and Poppy got him and can’t wait to try it out in deeper water.  He couldn’t understand that it wasn’t making him float in 4″ of water 😉

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 177

What a perfect day.  The weather was beautiful, so we headed to the park to meet some friends.  Owen and Noah had a blast being boys… playing with sticks, getting muddy and saving the princess (Anna).  So much fun.

After nap, Owen received his first birthday present! (His birthday is next Tuesday)  It is a bug catcher!  Like a little vaccum that sucks live bugs up, then there is a magnifying glass to see them better.  He said “this is just what I always wanted!”  Here, I never knew:)  Funny thing when we were opening the box… I heard a buzzing and looked, and there was a wasp by the window!  I killed it and threw it away so we could continue opening the gift.  I should have waited!  He could have sucked it up!  Then I started wondering… did they put the wasp in the box with the bug catcher?!?  Thanks Doreen, he loves it:)

lol…I didn’t read anything about it coming with a supply of bugs, but you never know! 😉 Glad he likes it.

Funny story. My cute granddaughter received a bug catcher for her birthday last year. On her first day out exploring for bugs she got stung by a bee!!

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 175-176

Everything has been going good.  Today we went to the hospital just for a blood count check.  His ANC was on the lower side (723) so he still has to watch being around sick people, but there was no need for any transfusions of platelets or blood today.

He starts his next phase next Wednesday.  He goes back into Interim Maintenance which is what he was in before the current phase.  We felt that phase was the hardest for us.  That is when he got the mouth sores and was hospitalized and he also had the drop leg.  After talking to his doctor today, he said the drop leg is definitely something that we will still need to watch for this next go around.  As for the potential for the mouth sores, he said that the effects from the Methotrexate don’t always appear each time.  Let’s hope that he doesn’t get those again…  He starts next week’s treatment with another Lumbar Puncture, and he gets the Methotrexate and Vincristine.  He will be on a 10 day plan again for the next 2 months.  But, there is light at the end of the tunnel.  Once he gets through this next phase, he will be in Maintenance.  That will be such a relief, only have to go to the hospital once a month instead of every week.  We are getting close!!

I don’t think I have posted a picture of this bear yet.  Jeff’s friend gave Owen this HUGE bear a while back and the boys love it.  It sits in the corner of their room and they like to pounce on it.  This is from this morning when they were having fun with him.  Meet, Huggie Bear:

I love the look of wonder on Logan’s face. That bear is huge! I kind of want to pounce on it too!

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 171-174

Happy Belated Mother’s Day to all of the Mother’s reading.  We had a wonderful weekend.  Owen has continued to feel good, so we have been enjoying every minute of it.

Saturday, Jeff and I got a much needed date night out while Owen had a special night with Miss Jessica and Jake.  He couldn’t stop talking about it all Sunday about how much fun he had.  Mother’s Day was peaceful and relaxing… exactly how Mother’s Day should be:)

Today was cold, but we still played outside for a while.
