Owen's Story bio picture
  • Hello, and thanks for joining me on my journey.

This is Owen. He is a 3 1/2 year old boy who is loving, energetic and loves to have fun. He was diagnosed with Leukemia on November 18, 2012. This is his story.

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 168

Not too exciting today… spent the morning at Costco, then did an impromptu picnic at Moraine State Park.  We were leaving Costco and Owen wanted to do something “different”.  So, we had a picnic lunch and played by the lake for a little while.  The boys had fun playing in the dirt and on the playground.  Love that he wears his soccer shirt from last year backwards, because he likes to see the numbers on the front.  Wouldn’t be so bad, but it’s a “V” neck:)

Owen’s still been feeling pretty good.  We noticed his voice being a little hoarse today.  We’ll have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t turn into anything.

I think the kid is a trendsetter. Backwards soccer shirts and 15 headbands is going to be the new thing next year. :)

What a fun impromptu trip!!! I booked a cabin at Moraine for this weekend! Crossing my fingers for good weather!

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 167

Great day!  We had beautiful weather and had fun playing around the house today.  And this night was a special treat… Neil Walker, the 2nd baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates was signing autographs at a nearby car dealership.  Owen could not wait and talked about it all day!!!  Neil was such a nice guy!  He signed 2 hats, a baseball and a card for Owen.  How awesome is that?!? and, he posed for a picture!!!

Knowing how much he loves baseball, Owen must be on cloud nine after having his picture taken with a Pirate. So special for him.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 164-166

Spring has finally arrived!  It is so nice to be able to be outside so much.  I think it really makes us all feel so much better.  Owen got his treatments on Friday and Saturday.  The nurse took his tubies out on Saturday and he did awesome!  He’s free!  That meant he could take a bath again, and he took a nice long one last night.

Today we got to go watch Daddy run a 1/2 marathon!!  It was a bright and early morning, but the weather could not have been better.  We had fun cheering all of the runners, and Owen was so proud of his Daddy.

That medal looks great on Owen! Congrats to Jeff!

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 163

It was gorgeous outside today!  We had to wait around for the nurse to come this morning and give Owen his medicine.  He did great!  After naps, we went to our good friends house for a very fun playdate!  Very last minute, but those are always the best:)

Here Owen is with his best friend.

We had a wonderful time! Noah said it was a perfect day. I have to agree!

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 162

Back to the hospital to start the 4 days of Cytarabine.  I was shocked to see that his blood counts were really high, considering.  His Doctor’s say they will drop a lot over the next week or two, but right now he is feeling good and we will take it!  He got the chemo today, and the nurse comes to the home the next 3 days, but then we don’t go back to the hospital until 2 weeks from today!  (as long as he feels good)… then the next visit is to check his blood counts, and 3 weeks from today he goes into the next phase.

Next phase is back into Interim Maintenance.  They said the doses start off lower than they did last time he went through it, but it lasts as long (2 months).  He will go in every 10 days for treatment.  That was, I think, our hardest phase so far.  That is the phase he got the mouth sores, and the foot drop.  We’re hoping that those things don’t return.

In the waiting area, they have a box full of donated hats and such.  Owen found this bandana today and loved it.  Goes right along with his love for Pirate Baseball!!
