Owen's Story bio picture
  • Hello, and thanks for joining me on my journey.

This is Owen. He is a 3 1/2 year old boy who is loving, energetic and loves to have fun. He was diagnosed with Leukemia on November 18, 2012. This is his story.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 122-124

Happy Spring!  Well, it doesn’t really feel like it, but it is officially here.  We had a really good weekend.  Owen was feeling much better than I had anticipated after last Wednesday’s treatment, so he actually got to go to his good friends birthday party on Friday night!  Happy Birthday Jack and Liam!!  Owen had so much fun and it was a very unique party.  They had it at the Byham Theatre and it was a Bubble show.  Two guys mime and create all kinds of bubbles.  Very interesting.  Owen lasted through all but about 5 minutes.  He was ready to go, so we left.

Today was pretty special too.  Our neighborhood has an egg hunt every year, so that was this afternoon.  Logan had no clue what he was supposed to do.  He would pick up one egg and just run with it.  Owen was a pro and did an awesome job at finding his eggs.

Here are all of my boys (well, except the dogs)…

And here is my sweet little bunny.

I hope everyone had a good weekend!

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 121

Surprisingly, Owen had a good bit of energy today.  After lunch, Logan laid down for a nap, but Owen wasn’t ready.  We were having some quiet time watching his movie, and pretty much as soon as he fell asleep, Logan woke back up.  I thought I could carry Owen up to his bed, but that didn’t work.  So, he didn’t nap for long enough, which made the rest of the day extremely long.  He really needed that nap and was quite cranky the rest of the day.  He felt good all day, so that is definitely something positive.

Look at what I have created… if only it worked…

I love this little photographer-in-training!

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 120

Start of Delayed Intensification.  Owen wasn’t allowed to eat or drink anything today because of his spinal tap.  His appointment wasn’t until 2:00pm, so he was not a happy boy.  I felt so bad for him because he was so hungry.  We tried to let him eat late last night, but that really didn’t help much.

His counts were all good for them to begin this phase.  They were lower than they were last appointment, but not too bad.  The procedure went well.  The Anesthesiologist had to give him an extra dose of the Ketamine because as the doctor started to insert the needle into the spinal fluid he twitched, so they gave him some more.  I am so glad that the one drug they give makes them not remember the whole procedure.  If he did, I am sure we wouldn’t be able to get him to the hospital each week.  So, with the combination of the drugs, and the lack of a nap yesterday, he was out… for a while.  Finally, around 5:30 pm he was awake enough to get him to the car to head home.

He has been doing pretty good this evening.  He started back on the steroid today, which he hates the taste of, so that is a challenge.  I do my best to crush it and mix it with sugar water and cherry syrup, but he still fights to get it down.

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 119

Nanny came for a visit today!  Owen asked all.morning.long when she would get here.  He gets so excited for his grandparents to come over.  I love it! Tomorrow starts the next phase, Delayed Intensification.  I am really dreading this.  Let’s all pray for the best!

Owen’s new thing is wearing shorts, and about 5 shirts.  Those shirts usually rotate, and don’t all stay on all day, but usually at least two of them do.  Here he is with his favorite tie-dye shirt on with one underneath.

I will be thinking of you and sending strength and positive thoughts as Owen enters this next phase. You are an amazing mama! Hugs to you.

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 118

There was much music made today.  On the guitar, drum, microphone, walls… the boys were having fun enjoying music.  There was also a lot of block building and coloring as well.

Not much else new today.  I hear often that I don’t post enough pictures of Logan, so here you go!
