So nice to have a good day at home. Owen and Logan had a lot of fun playing today. Nothing too exciting today, which is sometimes such a nice thing.
Owen was discharged from the hospital today!!! Yay! We were so happy to have him come back home… although when Jeff told Owen this morning when he woke up he started to cry. He said he was going to miss his nurses. That’s the one great thing about the 9th floor, they have the best nurses. They treat the kids so good. He also loves going to the playroom too. The one nurse, Olivia, that we had the past couple of days was super nice to him. He drew a picture for her last night and gave her a big hug since she wasn’t going to be in today. I am glad that he had a good experience this time, since when we were there at New Year’s, it was such an awful experience and he hated it. That was miserable.
Daddy brought him home and Logan was so happy to see him!! Owen slept pretty much all afternoon. He really needed to catch up on some of that sleep he has lost over the past week. Not much else going on… just glad to have the whole family under one roof tonight.
So glad to hear Owen is back home! Tell him Dominic and Sofia miss him! They talk about him often. Owen is always in our thoughts and prayers.
Owen was scheduled to get more chemo today, but they postponed it until next Wednesday. He has been having problems with his oxygen levels, and they didn’t want to sedate him just in case.
He was doing worlds better today… back to making the nurses smile. The goal for today was to get him off of the morphine and start him taking pain medicine by mouth as well as his other medicines. Before they will let him go home, he has to be able to sleep without oxygen. He isn’t on it while he is up, but as soon as he sleeps, his levels drop. We’ll see how tonight goes and they will be making a decision tomorrow.
We spend a lot of time in the play room today. He had so much fun. I think we just about played with every single thing in there. The Child Life Specialist that he really likes, Dana, stopped by to do some medical play today. She (and I) were surprised to see how much more realistic he plays now verses when he was first diagnosed. Wow, how much he has grown and experienced in such a short period of time. Who knows, maybe he will be a nurse or doctor some day… Hopefully we will get some good news tomorrow!!
Through the night on Tuesday was pretty rough. He didn’t sleep much and was in so much pain. The whole night we kept checking his temperature to make sure he didn’t get a fever. We also kept debating if we should just take him to the ED or try to wait it out until his appointment at 11 the next morning.
Wednesday morning was the first time in a few days that he spoke and what he said was “it hurts so bad, I want to go to the hospital.” I packed our bags and headed out before 8 am. I called at 8:30 to beg them to take him earlier and they were so great to say bring him in. We got here and they got the morphine and fluids started right away. We spent a good part of the day in the infusion room on the clinic side of the floor before they decided to admit him.
The night wasn’t too bad… He was very medicated and slept a lot. This morning they were doing his vitals and noticed that his oxygen concentration was down and wanted to get him on oxygen. He fought and wouldn’t let them put the cannula in his nose, so they gave him a blow by that we basically hold in front of his face. It seems that the morphine is causing this. they are now trying to cut back the morphine. So, we are spending another night here. He is definitely better than yesterday morning, but now just not liking being here. Hopefully we will get out soon
I am so glad to hear he is feeling a little better. We are sending lots of love your way.
Feel better Owen! Saying so many prayers you are the bravest little boy!
We are friends of Dave and Shirley and we keep all of you in our prayers. My favorite scripture verse is Ephesians 3:20. It encourages us to give God the glory for His almighty power at work in our lives. We need to keep Owencovered in prayer, but we also are encouraged to give God glory even before we see the miracle we are praying for.
Have a GODSITIVE ATTITUDE,BELIEVING THAT GOD IS ACTIVE IN OWEN’S LIFE AND LOVES HIM BEYOND WHAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF.
May God’s blessings be wth you and give you the grace to believe in HIS power. Anita bertuzzi
Another day of not talking… the insides of his cheeks are all white. Basically a mouth full of ulcers. So, if you know the pain of having one little ulcer in your mouth, just imagine if the whole inside of your mouth (and probably down your throat) was like that. I called the hospital again today, and they want to see him tomorrow. He hasn’t eaten anything since Sunday night, and is only drinking water. He has had a couple sips of apple juice, but we can’t get him to drink much. I think they want to give him fluids and take a look at him.
Communication is extremely rough. He just points to things. I have to try to guess, and then he isn’t really good about even giving a head nod. He feels so miserable…
I had to call the hospital again tonight because we don’t think we are going to be able to get his heart medicine in him and didn’t know how big of a problem that was going to be. The Oncologist that I talked with said one dose shouldn’t be too bad. She said we should pack some bags for tomorrow because they might admit him. She said this is usually the time during the treatment that the kids get these, and they end up with a fever. Hopefully I will have some better news tomorrow night.
Keeping Owen in my daily prayers. He is a fighter!!!
My heart aches for Owen. I’ll be thinking of him non stop. xxoo
