Owen's Story bio picture
  • Hello, and thanks for joining me on my journey.

This is Owen. He is a 3 1/2 year old boy who is loving, energetic and loves to have fun. He was diagnosed with Leukemia on November 18, 2012. This is his story.

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 52

We received a special package today.  It was from England!  A little back story… I started a photography project on 365 project last year.  You take a picture a day and upload it to this website, and you can follow all different photographers from all over the world.  I love this project so much because it really gets me to look at the world a whole new way and appreciate things around me that I might not have noticed prior to starting this project.  It has also provided me with some new friends.  Not that we have ever met, but you start to know these people by the pictures they take and the stories they tell.

When Owen was diagnosed, I posted a few pictures and had a very sweet message from one of my photographer friends, Sean.  He has a son that was born with a heart problem and has had to have 3 surgeries where they saw open his breastbone, stop his heart and work on him.  How scary!  We have emailed back and forth, and he wanted to send Owen something from England because when his son was younger and going through what he was dealing with, someone had done the same thing for him.  So, today we received two adorable bears dressed in true London attire.  One as a policeman, and one with the Beefeater uniform.  He told Owen to pick one and to give one to his brother.  Owen selected the Policeman.  He LOVES it and kept asking questions and talking about England all day.  It was funny because he was watching the Disney channel today, and a commercial came on and they were showing all of the landmarks in London and talking about it, and he held up his bear and said “that’s where he is from!”.  How great is that, my son is learning geography and how compassionate people are.  He kept saying, “that was so nice of him to send us these bears.”   Thank you so much, Sean, you truly made his day!!!

They look so cute together!

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 51

Owen seemed to have so much energy today.  He was even trying to “run”.  It’s not really running, as his legs still aren’t back to where they were, but a huge improvement.  He got this soccer ball from the treasure chest at the hospital yesterday, and was pretending like he was playing on his soccer team like last summer.

He wasn’t wanting to stay still, so this is the best I could get.  Feet (in motion).  Nana and Pap Pap came again for a quick visit, and Owen had a blast playing in the basement with Pap Pap.  It was hard to get him back upstairs.  Oh how nice it will be when we actually finish the basement and it isn’t 2 degrees down there.  Didn’t seem to bother Owen, who spent the day in shorts and a t-shirt.  I guess the medicines make him hot.

Sounds like a lot of fun! I’m glad he was having such a great day!

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 50

Another spinal tap today.  We got in the room for the procedure, and Owen was napping even before they came in to give him the sedation.  He was making up for not napping yesterday.  The Cardiologist that was there to do the sedation changed up his sedation meds due to his SVT.  They are just concerned that the others might have put him back in to SVT.  They give one that has an amnesia effect so that he doesn’t remember the procedure, one that makes him sleepy, one for the pain, so many… he did really good.  He just didn’t want to get up afterward.  He just slept, and slept, and slept…

They said to just let him sleep for a while.  The nurse finally came in and said she could take off his bandage while he was still sleeping, and that was what got him up:)  It wasn’t too bad, and then he got to go home.  One more spinal tap next week, then we will find out what the next stage of the treatment is going to be.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 48 & 49

Lots of fun yesterday, playing with crafts and cleaning…

Today we had an extra special day.  It was his first playdate since before he was diagnosed.  He had so.much.fun!!!!  A little back story, after he was diagnosed, I was contacted by the mom of one of Owen’s friends from school.  She explained that she was diagnosed with ALL in May of 2012 and was going through the children’s regiment.  She is in her last month before her maintenance starts, and since everyone is feeling well, brought her son over to play!!  Talk about a strong person… just listening to her stories gave me such inspiration.  What an amazing woman!  My heart really goes out to her and her family.  It has been a long almost 9 months, but she is doing great!!

Owen had so much fun playing, and they even stopped for a little break to watch some Disney.

Well, we were even more inspired by Owen. It filled my heart to see him playing and laughing. He will be so strong when this is all over. And, if I can add even an a small bit of hope I am glad to do so! We look frwd to our next play date.

Jake begins religion class today and said he is going to pray for Owen. I love how much he is learning about the human spirit. Thank you!!!!

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 47

It was pretty uneventful around here today, which is always a good thing.  As of today, Owen only had one band-aid left on his body.  It was located over his port from where he was accessed when he was in the hospital at the beginning of the week.  It is the only one we didn’t stress about getting off because we thought it would eventually just fall off.  Tonight, the boys were getting a bath, and we were trying to pour some water over the band-aid to loosen it up (of course Owen was not liking us messing with it), but then he kinda forgot about it.  Next thing we know, Logan reached up and pulled it right off!  I was laughing which of course made Logan laugh, then Owen started laughing too.  He said it wasn’t that bad.  Oh, how I wish they were all that easy to get off:)
