Owen's Story bio picture
  • Hello, and thanks for joining me on my journey.

This is Owen. He is a 3 1/2 year old boy who is loving, energetic and loves to have fun. He was diagnosed with Leukemia on November 18, 2012. This is his story.

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 216

Back to the hospital today for chemo.  It was so nice having his port accessed from Monday.  The nurse did a little dance because she knows how bad he hates having it poked.  She did have to de-access it, but it wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be.  There was a lot of bandage around the new port, but with some adhesive remover, it came off pretty quickly.  The Doctor ok’d him to get a bath, only not to submerse his port and stitches in the water.  He was all excited until he got undressed… he went and looked in the mirror and saw the stitches and sterile-strips and he changed his mind.  Once he was in, he had fun.

He’s not scheduled to go back until next Friday.  Then he has another lumbar puncture and the same medicines he got today.

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 214

Today was surgery number #3 for Owen.  They successfully removed the port that was working its way through, and installed a new port.  It is on his left side now instead of his right.  They weren’t able to keep it on the same side due to space.  The great news is that a new one was able to be installed.  It is working like it should, so let’s hope that it stays in place this time and his body doesn’t try to reject it.

He did great.  We got to the hospital before 9:30 and his surgery was scheduled for 11.  They ended up not taking him until around 12:30.  The surgery was scheduled to take around an hour and a half, but I think since they had to change sides, it took a little longer.  He wasn’t out of surgery until close to 3.  They said that his heart went into SVT during the surgery, but he was able to get himself out of it before having to give him any additional medicine.  The recovery was kind of long.  We didn’t leave the hospital till after 6, and by that time, Owen was ready to get out of there.

He is doing fine tonight.  Tired, and ready for bed.  Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers.  They pulled him through another successful surgery.

So happy to hear it! Was thinking about you all all day. He’s such a little trooper! :)

I’m so thankful that they were able to insert a new port for Owen. Now he’ll still be able to go in the water which he really enjoys. Long day for all of you but a good outcome. Always in my thoughts.

Owen’s Leukemia – Days 211-213

Friday we went back to the hospital to have Owen’s Doctor, Dr. Cooper, look at his port.  He agreed with everyone else that it needs to come out.  The Intervention Radiologist came up and looked at it too, and he thinks that he should be able to take it out and put a new one in at the same time.  It might be on the other side, but they won’t know until they pull the current one out.  So, surgery is scheduled for Monday morning.  We have to be there at 9:30am, but are not sure what time they are actually going to do the procedure.

As for the missed chemo from Wednesday, they rescheduled it for this coming Wednesday as long as everything goes ok tomorrow.  His Doctor doesn’t want to miss any of his treatments this phase, especially if he is feeling well and doing so good with them.  It will just push this phase out an extra week.

The weekend was beautiful!!  We had a lot of fun family time.  Saturday night we went out to dinner then went up to Mt. Washington to look for the “Super Moon”, but it was too cloudy.  It was still fun looking at the city and all of the activity!  Today we went hiking at McConnell’s Mill.  There is a little trail that goes back to a waterfall that is a perfect hike for the boys.  They had so much fun!!

Hope all goes well for Owen today. Great pic. Love the sticks in the hand. It reminds me of when my son was little. Brings on lots of smiles.

Owen’s Leukemia – Day 210

We had a super day!  Owen’s best friends, Noah and Annalise, have a pool and we got to go over and play and swim!  The pool was pretty cold, but the boys had a blast jumping in and swimming around.  There were many sun breaks to warm up, but they kept wanting to get back in (us Mommies on the other hand, were not so eager to be in there with them). We don’t know how much longer Owen will be able to swim, so we were enjoying every minute of it!  We also a had a fun picnic lunch that their other friends Jack and Liam came too.  So much fun!

Here is a shot of Owen and Logan in Noah and Anna’s Jeep.  Jeff and I always joke that Logan is going to be a Mayor someday.  He has the wave down:)
